More Cool Fan Art!

July 24th, 2008

Miss LTG did it again, and sent in another wonderful BCP. As an art student here at BVU, LTG is very tallented and doing rather well. I expect to see great things in the coming years as she works toward her BFA (bachlors of Fine Arts). Her last submition, viewable here, was the product of her first attempts at digital painting. LTG is picking up Alias quickly. This is her latest sketch, it took her half the time and already shows a market improvement.

Thanks for the art! I really appreciate it. Soon, there may be a gallery for it ;)

Thanks LTG!

Thanks LTG!

(wonder if I should start looking over my shoulder)

she-said-yes

She said “yes”.

July 16th, 2008

A few weeks ago Teh Doktor asked me if I would do him a favor.

He asked if it was possible for me to draw a mini-Doktor proposing. He had a plan you see, and I was honored to help. Over the next two weeks, I drew feverishly, making sure that the comic I made for him was the best it could be. The end product, I’m pleased to say, came out just right.

With it’s posting carefully planned Teh Doktor set out upon his quest. I remained in front of my computer, nervously awaiting the signal to press post. I think I might have checked my phone a thousand times today. At 1:15 I received the txt, quickly posted the comic, and anxiously awaited the good news.

Shortly thereafter I got a txt from Teh Doktor. No text, just an animated gif. A little smilie face.

She said yes.

Teh Doktor had a sneaky friend with a camera record he event, take a look on his blog: http://doksmith.blogspot.com/

Congratulations my friends, may the joy of the day follow you for the rest of your lives together.

larger-than-life

Larger than Life

July 10th, 2008

I’ll be the first to admit, I give Flynn a little shit sometimes. Actually, I give Flynn a monumental amount of shit, about everything from his parentage to his personal grooming, and for the most part he takes it all in stride. I have even presumed to give Flynn shit about his art from time to time…

I stand corrected.

The long awaited frames are finally polished to his satisfaction, and the new versions of Raksha, Nerdy, and HSBP stand before you. I’ve got to say, I’m pleased beyond my fondest hopes. The girls are hawt, the layout is clean, and I’m freakin’ huge… like, I use mutagen for bodywash kind of huge… like, Kingpin hired me as a personal trainer kind of huge… like, She-Hulk and The Juggernaut had a love-child kind of huge…

Finally, my monumental self-importance and messianic complex has a visual counterpart! I think Flynn may have his major at UW all wrong; he should be in Psych, because this is an incredibly astute reading of my particular illness. HSBP is large, in charge, and well armed; if he could somehow make me a Viking too, it’d be like my best afternoon nap dreams came to life on the page!

Want to see the new characters in action, killing cherubs and smiting heathens? Stay tuned…

bring-the-pain

Bring the Pain

July 9th, 2008

“Pain is just weakness leaving the body.”

Despite the scientific inaccuracy of that statement, I have always liked the image. I also like the idea that it is weakness, not sweat, that pours off me when I workout. Of course, that goes hand in hand with the idea that the pudge around my midsection is made of weakness, not a thick layer of Taco Bell and Pizza Hut…

At any rate, there is a lot of pain in my world these days. I’m not complaining, mind you, just making an observation. My workout schedule has been hampered a bit the last few days due a slight back injury, but I have still managed to get my runs in and do kettlebells on the off days. I’m not hitting the bells as much as I’d like, but I am still getting a good sweat from them and a hard burn in my arms, shoulders, and legs. And that equates to pain. I usually wake up feeling stiff, and able to pinpoint exactly where the previous day’s workout hit me hardest. Lately it’s been my shoulders and my forearms, but kettlebells are an equal opportunity torture device, and I have woken up hurting just about everywhere at some point in the last few weeks.

Some of the Faithful, especially the lovely and caring ladies of the local Flock, have expressed concern that I rarely move without a groan, and my joints sound like a vigorously squeezed sheet of bubble wrap when I stand up. Do not be troubled - I am good with the pain. Pain, is my friend.

Over the years, I have become very adept at knowing the difference between the “that just hurts because you used it” pain and the “if you keep fucking with it, it will never heal” kind of pain. One builds you, the other keeps you in check. One you can avoid but shouldn’t, the other you should avoid, but can’t. That leaves you with two choices - continue and get hurt, or quit and fail to progress - which is really only one choice, now isn’t it?

Like so many lessons learned in the gym, this transitions to other arenas of life very nicely. Pain is inevitable unless you hole up and quit. Holing up and quitting is not really an option, so get on with the pain. In fact, to live fully, to live large, you have to court the pain. Seek it out, and ram right into it, full speed ahead, and no fair dodging!

At the risk of this turning into a rousing locker room speech, I’ll stop - whipping you all into a froth would just turn ugly once happy hour arrived, and who wants that on their conscience?

some-important-news

Some Important News!

May 28th, 2008

The Pope and I have been busy with some pretty major renovations to the comic over the past few days. So far (as some of you know) we’ve been busy playing with services like twitter. The widgets for witch will make an appearance on the new site soon enough. But that’s a different story.

The big news right now is that the Pope’s blog The Ministry of Linus, and my blog Flynn Unedited, have been integrated into the Vatican site! Last night, after a few days of prep work, I migrated the Pope’s epic archive, and my… fledgling list of posts, into the database. It took some doing, but I was not to be denied.

Other major chances include a revamping of the podcasts. The current podcasts have already been ‘hidden’ while we work a few things out. New podcasts will continue, but in a slightly different, less damning, light. As with the comic, when we started podcasting we really didn’t know what went into one… and what never should. Having played with the idea for some time we’ve decided to revamp the way the podcasts work. The new podcasts will still be funny, I promise. They will however, be slightly more thought out, and recorded… you know… sober. Stay tuned for more updates (hehe, see what I did there?) and you’ll have new downloadable content before you know it.

And last but not least, as is our way at the Black Vatican, I want to ask you, our loyal followers, what you would like to see. Would you like more of something? Less of something? Do you have an idea we might enjoy, naked pudding wrestling perhaps? Let us know. Seriously, send us something!

back-up-and-running

Back up and running.

May 27th, 2008

Hey folks,

Some of you may have noticed that the archives have been a bit wonky this weekend. The problem started on Friday when I tried to update the website. Unfortunately the seven, yeah seven, tornadoes that ravaged our city left most of the technology in disrepair. The Pope and I had a hell of a time even tweeting, let alone blogging or updating the site. Clearly this was a plot from that other Vatican to try to keep us down. Fear not, we will prevail.

Today I updated the last of the missing comics, and sorted through the post dates putting comics back in the right order. The rest of the pages on the site should be fixed also, please have a look around and let me know if something doesn’t look right.

Thanks.
